DIY Pallet Framed Chalk Board

DIY Pallet Framed Chalk Board - Come learn how to make one of these!Hello everyone. Welcome back!

I have been seeing all of these cute chalk boards on Pinterest and decided to make one (or two) for myself.  I learned a little about hand and chalk lettering too, so I wanted to try it out.

I am not a very patient person, so I purchased a sheet of chalk board from the hardware store instead of buying the chalk spray paint to paint a sheet of wood and wait for it to dry.  You’ll need small screws, square, measuring tape, pencil, circular saw, miter box with saw, drill, sand paper,  stain, clamps, and pallet wood.  (To learn the easiest way to break down a pallet, check out this post!)

I made two different chalk boards framed different ways.  The large one is just squared together and the smaller one has mitered corners.

Let’s start with the big chalk board!

This was the easier one to put together.  I just measured and cut the chalk board to 16″ x 22″.

I then cut 2 pieces of pallet wood to 24″ each.  I wanted an inch of overhang on the top and bottom of the board.  I set those into place so I could measure the width to cut the 2 smaller pieces of wood that would go on the top and bottom of the frame.

Here’s a little tip for you:  if you are too impatient to use liquid nails, just use small screws!

I tried using liquid nails to put the wood pieces onto the board and I even put weights on them to help.  I waited as long as I could and tried to flip the board over…it just fell apart. Haha!  I took a deep breath and just drilled screws into the back of it and that held up just fine!  I put some old stain on it and that seemed to bring the wood to life.

I initially wanted the frame to be flush all around, but I ended up having the two side pieces extend a little farther than the top and bottom pieces.

I actually LOVE the way it turned out!

Here are some fun things you can draw on your new chalk board. *I just wanted to play around with the chalk and chalk pens too…

Next up…the smaller chalk board with mitered corners.

This one was a little more challenging, but don’t worry, I will walk you through each step.  I love pallet wood and I LOVE that things don’t have to be perfect!  My lines don’t always add up, but hey, it gives the projects so much character; which makes them one of-a-kind.

My chalk board piece I used was pretty narrow and long.  I didn’t want to have a huge bulky frame around it.  I decided to cut the pieces of pallet boards long-ways.

I measured 2 inches down all the the way across the board and then drew a line.  I clamped down both ends to where I could still get the circular saw where I needed it.

I then just cut down the line.  I had to cut two pallet boards like that because they were only 3 3/4″ wide and I wanted my frame to be at least 2″.  I only used the 2″ sides of the ones I cut so my mitered corners matched up better.

Once I got all of my pieces, I cut them square to the chalk board.  I wanted to see if it would fit before I cut the mitered corners into them.

Since I don’t have a handy miter saw, I had to use a miter box.  I like to make things easy, so I just used it to score the pieces where they needed to be cut.  Then, I just used my circular saw to cut the pieces at those angles.  I bet a jig saw would have been even easier.

I sanded the mitered corners a little and they fit just how I wanted them to.  I have said this before, but I enjoy working with pallet wood because it is never perfect and helps me to cover up my mistakes, hah!

I didn’t even want to attempt to use liquid nails again, so I just flipped everything over and drilled small screws into the back of it.  A dark oak stain looked beautiful on a test piece of pallet wood, so I used it on this frame and it came out great!

I had a lot of fun doing some hand lettering on these!
